Palm oil is a widely used vegetable oil derived from the fruit of oil palm trees, primarily the species Elaeis guineensis. It is valued for its high yield, affordability, and versatility, being used in food products, cosmetics, and biofuels. However, its production has raised significant environmental concerns, including deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in countries like Indonesia and Malaysia, which are the world’s largest producers. Efforts are ongoing to promote sustainable palm oil cultivation through certification schemes such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) to mitigate environmental and social impacts.
